2013 New Mexico Small Business Person of the Year – Anthony R. Tenorio, CEO/Chairman, Applied Technology Associates, Albuquerque, NM.,
In 1983, Mr. Tenorio accepted a job with Applied Technology to develop sophisticated data systems in support of the High Energy Laser Facility at White Sands Missile Range, the Air Force Research Lab’s Relay Mirror experiment, STARLAB, Altair, and the High Altitude Balloon Program.
Mr. Tenorio became President/CEO in 1992. In a management buyout he became principal owner in 1998. Under his leadership, ATA has transformed itself into a technology know-how company specializing in precision sensing, measurement and control engineering services and products. ATA currently manufactures products that meet the high performance demands of ground, air, and space applications in the areas of platform stabilization, vibration and motion measurement, inertial navigation and line of sight imaging system for both government and commercial customers.
ATA has won two national awards: the Small Business Administration’s Prime Contractor of the Year Award in 2004 and the Department of Commerce Manufacturer of the Year in 2008. In 2012, ATA was ranked by Hispanic Business Magazine as the 19th fastest growing Hispanic-owned company in the U.S..
Anthony Tenorio leads ATA, a $40 million precision measurement, sensing and controls company he helped build over the past 30 years. His successful career comes from humble beginnings in Willard, New Mexico where he was one of 10 children. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. The July/August edition of Hispanic Business magazine placed ATA at 19 on its list of the 100 fastest-growing Hispanic-owned companies in the U.S. ATA registered as an 8(a) business by the Small Business Administration, and graduated from the program in 2007. Based on its 37-year history supporting complex stabilization and beam control solutions, Mr. Tenorio has positioned ATA to be a highly sought small business offering related key capabilities that span space, air, and ground applications. Mr. Tenorio’s creative vision and relationship building has enabled ATA to organically grow the company through joint ventures. One of the more recent high-profile joint ventures involved ATA Aerospace and AFRL. This project involved coordinating the launch of the Red Bull Stratos balloon that carried daredevil Felix Baumgartner to the edge of space on Oct. 14, 2012 for his supersonic plunge near Roswell, New Mexico. In addition to his leadership in the science and technology sector, Mr. Tenorio lends his expertise and leadership in his local community. High commitment to improving education is evident by his 14 years on the Estancia Schools Board, where he helped upgrade infrastructure and improve academic programs. Mr. Tenorio and his wife have also built cabins, sports facilities and other infrastructure on their property in McIntosh, New Mexico, where they hold a free week long summer camp for about 40 local children every year.
